"Carmilla" is a horror story by the Irish author Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu from 1872 and one of the early works of vampire literature - it preceded Bram Stoker's "Dracula" (1897) by 26 years.
The title character is a prototypical example of the lesbian vampire who wishes to live out her romantic desires with the female protagonist. She is torn between tender affection and vampire greed when it comes to the object of her desire. Here, typical elements of the Victorian gothic novel are combined with female eroticism and sexuality. The story has been adapted several times in film and other media.
